Course content:  

- Electromagnetic spectrum. Quantum nature of radiation. Types of radiation from the atom. Statistical nature of radiations.

- Processes of radioactive transformation, radioactive decays, emission of ionizing radiation from nuclei

- Interactions of gamma and X-ray radiation with matter. Compton effect. Photoelectric effect, creation of pairs, nuclear interactions, artificial production of radioisotopes. Simple exponential attenuation. Exponential attenuation for multiple absorption modes. Attenuation coefficients. Attenuation of a collimated beam. Attenuation of an uncollimated beam. Spectral effects. Build up factor. Theorem of reciprocity.

- Natural sources of ionizing radiation and radioactivity

- Dosimetric quantities. Fluence. KERMA and KERMA components. Relationship between KERMA and Fluence for photons and neutrons. Absorbed dose. Rate of absorbed dose. Exposition. Exposure and connections with other quantities. Dose equivalent. Accumulated dose. Depth dose and isodose lines. Dose from ingested radionuclide through breathing and food. Maximum permitted doses.

- Pollution of the environment with sources of ionizing radiation. Doses of internal radiation

- Detection and spectrometry of radiation. Detectors.

- Statistics in radiation physics
